Crossing the Bridge

ProActors' work in the community involves people of all ages and abilities in devising, creating and presenting their own work.  Whether this is through drama, film, creative writing, dance, music or visual arts (or any combination of these), it's about people having their say.

Community projects in which we've been involved include:

Crossing the Bridge

Crossing the BridgeThis original musical play was commissioned by Birmingham City Council with the aim of bringing younger and older people together. Following a workshop in which both groups expressed their concerns about each other - as well as sharing common ground - Pro-Actors wrote a script based on comments shared by group members.

Based loosely on the Billy Goats Gruff tale, Crossing the Bridge tells the story of the Bridge Community Centre, a venue running clubs for all ages. Although initially at odds with each other, they come together as a team to foil the plans of wicked property developer, Mr Wolf.

Crossing the BridgeFirst performed at the Cerebral Palsy Midlands Centre in Harborne, Birmingham in October 2008, by popular request, Crossing the Bridge was revived in May 2009, with the original cast, and is now being rolled out as a flagship intergenerational project across the whole city of Birmingham, incorporating new cast members working alongside the original cast and writing their own versions of the play.

Community Skills Kit

Commissioned by Trident Housing for adults with both learning and physical disabilities, Pro-Actors worked alongside clients to create a series of short sketches highlighting the difficulties faced by many people in their everyday lives, when even a trip to the doctor can involve battling with public transport and insensitive professionals.  This was presented to an audience of peers and health and transport professionals, and was followed by an interactive workshop led by the performers.

We also work extensively in schools both complementing the National Curriculum and exploring issues relevant to the students.  This work ranges from Shakespeare to storytelling to collectively-devised original drama.
